Switchboard upgrades

What it is

Your switchboard is where the power comes into the house and gets split into circuits. Older boards use ceramic fuses and fuse wire. A modern board uses circuit breakers and safety switches that cut the power fast when something goes wrong.

When you need it

  • You've still got the old fuses, or a board with asbestos backing.
  • The board is full and you're adding solar, a pool pump, an EV charger or a new kitchen.
  • Breakers trip often, or the board feels warm or smells hot.
  • You're selling, and the building inspector has flagged it.

What the job involves

We look at what's on each circuit, quote the new board and book a day. The power is off for a few hours while we fit the new enclosure, breakers and safety switches. Every circuit is labelled so you can read it in the dark with a torch, then it's all tested and you get the paperwork.

Safety switches

What it is

A safety switch (an RCD) watches the power going out on a circuit and coming back. If some of it leaks away, through a faulty appliance or through a person, it cuts the power in a fraction of a second. Circuit breakers protect the wiring. Safety switches protect people.

When you need it

  • Your board doesn't have safety switches on every circuit.
  • You press the test button and nothing happens.
  • You're selling or renting out a home. Queensland has rules about safety switches for both.

What the job involves

If your board has room and is in good shape, we fit them into it. If it doesn't, we'll talk you through a board upgrade first. Every safety switch is tested once it's in, and we'll show you how to test it yourself every few months.

Smoke alarms

What it is

Photoelectric smoke alarms are good at picking up the slow, smoky fires that start in homes at night. Interconnected means that when one goes off, they all go off, so you hear it wherever you are in the house.

When you need it

  • Queensland is phasing in new smoke alarm rules. New and renovated homes, then homes being sold or rented, have already had to comply.
  • From 1 January 2027 the rules cover every home in Queensland, including owner-occupied homes.
  • Alarms must be photoelectric and interconnected, in every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every level.
  • Any alarm more than 10 years old needs replacing.

What the job involves

We look at what you've got, work out where alarms need to go, and fit hardwired or 10-year sealed battery alarms that talk to each other. Then we test them with you, so you hear them all go off together. The deadline is close, so it's worth booking before the end-of-year rush.

Lighting and ceiling fans

What it is

LED downlights, pendants, outdoor and garden lights, sensor lights, and ceiling fans for bedrooms, living areas and patios.

When you need it

  • Old halogen downlights are running hot and eating power.
  • The patio is too dark to use after sunset.
  • The bedrooms are too warm to sleep in through summer.
  • You want sensor lights on the driveway or side path.

What the job involves

We check the ceiling space and the circuit first, then fit and test. Fans get mounted to something solid, so they run quiet and don't wobble. Outdoor fittings are rated for the weather, which matters in salt air.

Power points and data

What it is

New and extra power points, doubles in place of singles, USB outlets, weatherproof outdoor points, and TV and data points.

When you need it

  • Power boards are daisy-chained behind the TV.
  • An extension lead runs out to the shed.
  • The home office needs proper data, not patchy wi-fi.
  • The kitchen bench has nowhere to plug in the kettle.

What the job involves

Most points go in within a few hours. We run cable inside the walls wherever we can, so you aren't left with surface conduit running across the room.

EV chargers

What it is

A wall-mounted charger in the garage or carport on its own circuit. It's much faster than plugging into a normal power point.

When you need it

  • You've bought an EV, or one's on the way.
  • You're charging from a power point and it's taking all night.
  • You have solar and want to charge from it during the day.

What the job involves

We check your switchboard and power supply first to make sure a charger won't overload them. Then we run a dedicated circuit with its own protection, fit the charger, and set it up with you before we go.

Fault finding

What it is

Tracking down why something isn't working: power that keeps tripping, dead circuits, flickering lights, or a power point that's warm to touch.

When you need it

  • The safety switch keeps tripping and you can't work out why.
  • Half the house has gone dark but the neighbours are fine.
  • Lights flicker or dim when something else turns on.
  • If anything is sparking, smells like burning or the board is hot, switch off at the main switch if it's safe to, and call straight away.

What the job involves

We test circuit by circuit until we find the cause. Then we tell you what it is and what it costs to fix, before we fix it.
